seems no water in the boiler?

Before the first time to turn the heat on this year, I drained the water out of the boiler. Close the drain valve and turn on the water supply and then, turn the power switch. I notice the boiler fire up just about 5 seconds after I turn on the power switch. is it filling up the boiler with cold water so quickly? The boiler burn for 10 seconds then shut down and there is no heat come out of each floor. I shut down the power and drain the water again but, there is no water come out. Instead, a little steam shoots out of the openning of the drain pipe. Can any pros give me a clue why this happen before I call for service?
Thanks for any suggestions !

    Fill The System

When you drain the system you have to purge the air you introduced. Depending on how your piping is done this is done a few different ways. Many systems have a boiler drain on the return side of each zone so you turn on your fresh water make-up and put a hose on the drain for each zone and purge the air out of each zone individually. You'll fill the boiler when you purge the first zone. You may want to leave this to a professional to avoid blowing the relief valve, or having air locks in the system.

Why did you drain the system? This introduces oxygen which promotes oxidation of iron parts(boiler, pumps). You shouldn't have to drain the system unless repairs are needed. Running pumps with no water in them is not good for them. Hopefully everything is ok, but it sounds as if calling a professional may be in order just to be sure.

Make sure your automatic air vent is working.

    Never dry fire a boiler

Is this a steam boiler or hot water system? Either way you should make sure that the water is either up to the indicated level on the sight glass (steam) or that the system is filled (hot water) before turning up the thermostat from its lowest setting. You can crack the boiler if it suddenly fills with cold water when hot and empty.
