Teledyne Laars Question JVS160H

Scott:

I've moved a number of these puppies in my day. 99% of the time these boilers start dancin' around you can bet it's flow related. I'd look at the circulator immediatly; it's normally the culprit. Also don't ignore a system 'addition'. Did the HO throw on some extra baseboard, etc this past summer. That'll shove the TDH just up high enough to mess with the flow. We all have a tendency to forget that this little sweetheart is crankin' out 160 k of fire when running full tilt. Lots of fire for some of the small cartridge circ's we all use. There was time when we sold taco 0010's as a standard pump with this just to get around borderline flows with smaller pumps.
Good luck,
Nels

    Hey Guys

Anybody have any ideas towards a Teledyne Laars JVS160 H, its about 20 years old, and jumps off the ground once it gets around 160°. Ahh not really, but she's makin steam.

Its got three zones, no primary/secondary or boiler pump. Now I know it should have p/s or boiler pump but it been
that way for 20 years and just started having this problem about two years ago and it's getting worse.

I believe its sediment but could be low flow from the circulators loosing the impellar size due to wear.

Also questioning the gas flow switch to modulate the flame height but I know they don't make those parts anymore and I don't want to play with it.

I've told the owner its time to let her go, but that I would see what could be done.

Any insight from Teledyne guys would be helpfull. I'll call the factory tommorrow.

    Thanks

    Scott

    limed up

The 58 helical coil heat exchanger might be limed up. The flow restriction through the unit would make the small amount of water flash to steam in short order. I have seen it first hand on some of their Endurance boilers. Check it out, and the hardness of the water in the system.

    Hi, Scott.

So you know....those modulating valves are still available. We don't build them onto the product anymore, but we still have replacement valves.

As you know, anything slowing the flow down can cause this. Also, if the water flow has been marginal over the years, the copper in the heat exchanger may have been stressed, and now you are seeing the effects. Since you say the problem is getting worse, this would make sense. As the copper gets overheated, it starts losing its ability to deal with the overheating, and it sort of snowballs from there.

Although the inside of the tubes might be crudded up, that's not as likely. These heat exchangers are not the same design as the Endurance heat exchangers, and water quality is not as much of an issue.

Let me know if I can help.

    Rumbling Boiler

Lack of waterflow, what ever the cause. Either no pump off delay after the burners shut down, internal build up in the heat exchanger or pump performance problems are among the several probable causes.

    Thanks to all

Talked to the HO and gave him the options.

He has just done a good size equity loan this summer for work and is hoping to get another season out of this unit.

SOO.... on Tuesday we'll put three new Grundfos 15-58's and see what happens. I am wondering if it would help to throw some Hercules cleaner in there for a week and see if that helps at all. I suppose if it is lime nothings going to get it out except a small guy with a chisel.

    I'll let you know.

    Scott
