I would guess that big vent in the hallway is the common return that's connected to the blower inlet. The problem you have is very common and the correct way to start is to hire a blower door person to do a duct blaster test to find the usual problems in the attic connections, after that you seal things up with the correct tape and insulate all the duct, then you use the clear film that shrinks with a hair dryer to cover all the small discharge and one large return openings until next summer.

i have a boiler in my home, but the previous owner installed air conditioning in my home. it is very cold in here during winter. i have shut all of the air conditioning vents, but i wanted to put a thing piece of insulation over them and cover in plastic to keep the cold air from coming down from the attic. I also want to do the same to the big vent in my hallway (which does not have a blower attached to it) is there any harm in doing this?
any advice?
