the available Holohans and a bunch of friends went to Brooklyn to participate in the second Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk. Here's the story behind this.
On September 11, 2001, Stephen Stiller, a NYC firefighter was off duty. When he saw the planes hit the World Trade Center he headed for Manhattan from his home in Brooklyn. The bridges and tunnels were closed at that point so Stephen Stiller strapped on 60 pounds of equipment and RAN through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center, a distance of just under three miles. He entered the tower and died there. He was 34 years old and left a wife and five children.
So the firefighters started a foundation to help the orphans of 9/11, and also burn victims among New York's Bravest. Last year, they raised $250,000. This year, in the rain, more than 4,000 people traced Stephen Stiller's steps to what we now call Ground Zero. Each paid $30. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life. Inside the tunnel there was a color guard, one person with an American flag for each firefighter and police officer lost that day. The flags stretched on and on and on.
It was quite an experience, and we'll all be back to do it again next year.
All gave some. Some gave all. Hug your kids.
