Diaphram tank charging

about expansion tanks and read somewhere that you can install a guage close to the water connection of a diaphram tank and adjust your air charge according to that pressure. I've always thought you were supposed to shut and bleed off water pressure before checking the air pressure. Are both ways OK or not??? WW

    There must be no pressure

on the water side of pre-charged tanks when checking and adjusting the air charge. An extra tip - use oil-free air.
