Vitogas 050 vs Other Boilers

LD,

The most important difference that this boiler has over the others that you mentioned is that it is a full wet based boiler.

A typical American Gas Boiler is a dry base (or a copper tube in the Laars case). This is important because any sludge or sediment that develops in a heating system (especially an older heating system) will settle at the lowest point in the heating system. For a dry base boiler that low point is directly above the burner flame. This sludge will slow the heat transfer between the flame and the water, decreasing efficiency.

In a wet base boiler design the lowest point or the bottom of the casting is below the flame, providing no resistance of heat transfer.

Also, some other important features of the Vitogas 50 are, a secondary manual reset high limit, a greater insulation value, and a system pump aquastat that will stop the system pump if the boiler temp. drops below the dewpoint, preventing condensation and thermal shock.

    Vitogas 050 vs Other Boilers

    Experts, help me out.

Is a Vitogas 050 boiler any better than the standard W-M, Laars, or other American boilers?
Or is it such an old design now to have no advantage?

Application is radiant in-floor heat and indirect hot water tank.

(I specifically want to know about the 050)
    Thanks

    The answer is..

yes...it's a better boiler. However, the EC50 or Vitogas 50 is only made for the N American market. It doesn't have the bells and whistles that the Vitogas100 has, and is their "entry level" boiler. It does feature a stainless gas trane built by Viessmann (WM does not)and the cast iron is made to German specification and has a higher heat transfer rate. Do you intend to use an outdoor reset control?

    Vitogas 050 and Outdoor Reset

Yes, I am using an outdoor reset (Tekmar?) with
the Vitogas 050. Why? Is there anything I should know?

    I though the biggest feature

of a wet leg is it completely surrounds the burner flame for more heat transfer surface.

In a closed loop hydronic system, properly cleaned and treated, there shouldn't be a sludge or sludge build up. Where would the sludge come from??

    Your right Hot Rod

in a properly designed and treated system, there is no dirt.
If and when there is is dirt that is one advantage of a wet base boiler. Also bringing the return water in below the flame and having a lower return, 120F. With the 3 to 1 rule that means with 20F lower reset temp about 6% more efficiant
    1. Wet base
    2. Lower return temp.
    3. 2 1/2" of insulation
    4. 3 Aqua stats built in[fixed high limit, adjustible, and
pump relay that turns on at boiler temp of 116F
    5. step open gas valve.
    6. Stainless steel lazer cut burner tubes
    7. Castings are painted with a heat resistant paint.
    8. Very quite

I havent seen anyone mention the "C" in the "EC"(Economical Compact). The Vitogas 50 has a very small footprint.
