RADIATION CONTROL VALVE

our Warren Webster two pipe steam system radiation units(which are recessed in the wall) have a small disc with holes all around on each inlet valve stem. This disc has a small stub which stops the opening of the valve by meeting a post on the valve housing. This disc can be rotated and I just wondered if the purpose was to allow more or less steam into the radiant finned panel?

Each stop
on that dial represents 10 square feet of radiation. It causes the valve to act like an orifice. The installer would set the valve for a value that was a bit less than the radiator's rating, thereby assuring that the trap would see nothing but condensate. These valves helped extend the life of the traps.Retired and loving it.0
