AmeriCorp was started by President Clinton to enlarge what was once called VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). You may have read in the papers that much of the money going to AmeriCorp has been cut in recent years. Sign of the times, I guess.
The people who volunteer for AmeriCorp are mostly young Americans, fresh out of college who believe that everyone should do something to help this country. My daughter, Colleen, is one of those people. She graduated from Providence College and signed up for a year of service. She receives hardly any money at all (we subsidize her rent in Boston). She goes to work every day at Emerson College and her job is to inspire students to get involved with the community, to volunteer, to help people who are less fortunate.
Instead of going on Spring Break to be in a Girls Gone Wild video, many of the students take alternative breaks. They go to places in Massachusetts where there are very poor people, and they help them. They need to eat while they're there, and because of the budget problems with AmeriCorp, they have to raise their own money to buy food. They need $1,000. We have most of it already.
So please follow this. These young people finish an education that cost upwards of $140,000. Then, instead of thinking of themselves, they set out to serve America. The funding to their program is cut so they have to raise money on their own to travel with younger Americans, all with the hope that those younger Americans might get out of their own heads for a week or so and consider the plight of people who are less fortunate. That's how we move on in America. By passing the spirit on to others.
This is why I'm doing this.
To those who have received much, much shall be expected.
Luke 12:48.
I like that part of the Bible. Life's really not all that complicated, lads.
Hug your kids. Love one another.
Please help.
Thanks.
