What would Jimmy Buffet do? I don't know what he'd do, but it looks like we're not getting our power back for at least a week - or longer.

Add one transfer switch, a generator & presto - refrigerators are humming again, the tv's working, lights are on, ahhhhhhhhh - hot water once again now that my boiler's running and last but not least, the computer is on for visiting The Wall.

Next comes chain saw madness!

    Stock

Maybe I should have prepared for Isabel in a different way -- buying Home Depot stock. They must have sold a ton of generators.

Glad to hear that you are managing Dave. Between the Great Blackout and Isabel, a lot of folks have relived the pioneers days this year!

    Hey Dave,

Welcome back to the real world!Your gonna be the most popular guy on the block, with a tv. My advice is to make sure the blender works without tripping a circut breaker, and mix up a mess-O' hurricanes, and maybe a Margurita or 2 .(that's what Jimmy would do!)

    Hope all is well.Chris

    The Neighbors.....

get powered up too. Mom & Dad are next door & a huge venerable old Sycamore that used to reside within the center of their patio now lays just a few feet from their bedroom. A narrow escape! So, in the AM, I power up our place for a few hours to keep the refrigerators cooled down & then Mike & I load up the generator to power up their refrigerators, a freezer, one light and a TV so they can catch up on world events.

Then its back to cleaning up the mess. Trying to pull the downed pine tree from its tangled mess across the pond has proven to be quite the challenge. At 3,000 lb breaking point, the 100' rope makes quite a zinging sound when she breaks!

BTW, never ever hard wire a generator into a breaker panel thinking all is ok by throwning the main disconnect to off. The neutral remains connected and you can electrocute the linemen working on the power lines.

Also - and this should go without saying - never run a generator inside a home or other confined space. This morning's news lists two dead in MD from CO as a result of running a generator in their basement.

Ran into a friend last evening as we headed out for dinner. He's an electrician who has been called into service and is working the mandatory 16 hour shifts until everyone gets power restored. He was happy to see some smiling faces instead of the nasty comments they are enduring. They're working like dogs and taking a lot of verbal abuse. He was relieved to learn our generator is correctly connected and expressed concern regarding the thousands of generators being sold without proper warnings. He's already seen several where the homeowners have simply purchased wire and two male plugs to back feed recepticals!

Disconnected from the dead grid, PAH.

  • Any wagers?

I'll bet if the power is out a week or more, the maternity wards will be busy in about 9 months.....
