auto water feeder

If it's recommended to install a water meter with an automatic water feeder on a steam boiler, what kind of gpm's and in what period of time should I be looking for that would indicate trouble?

you should be able to account for almost ALL water that registers on the meter. All you should see is what replaces blowdowns of the boiler and controls.

Any water beyond that is the beginnings of a leak. Look for the cause. If you don't find it, watch for the water to increase.

Like anything else that you monitor, the first reading doesn't mean much. Readings over a period of time establish a baseline. Variations from THAT are what you are looking for. There might be a seasonal variation, reflecting run time, which is acceptable, but investigate strange water usage.

    Look into

the Hydrolevel feeder. It has a built-in electronic water meter. Mighty fine idea!

    Check out

Dan, went to the link and found a real cool tee in their installation instructions, an FOEM tee with room for the probe, that really looks professional.

    hydrolevel

Right on, Dan. I've been using the Hydolevel autofeeder and it's a great unit. Solved several flooding problems with it last heating season, When steam systems got a real workout. The meter make life so easy........
