I spent yesterday afternoon
at PS 97 in Queens. I'm the Site Captain for that school on New York Cares Day, which is October 18. I've got more than 100 volunteers and a lot of paint and we're going to brighten the place for the kids that go to school there. It's K-5.
I've told you this before but wanted to mention it again, this being September 11. Two years ago today, so many of us asked what we could do, and many got frustrated because there was a sense of helplessness. Many gave blood. Some went to Ground Zero.
I chose to do this. We work with the schools because they're in crisis and there's not enough money and the little ones are our future. When you affect a child you have the power to change the world. I really believe that. I've seen it happen with our daughters.
The Jesuits talk about what makes for a good citizen. There are three tenents:
1. A good citizen must be educated.
2. Education must extend beyond school.
3. Because you are blessed by being educated, you owe a debt to others who are not as fortunate as you.
On September 11, if you can find it in your hearts to help some kids who are not as blessed as you are, please consider making a donation to New York Cares. They lost many of the corporate grants that keep them running because of the stock market situation. The children don't understand that, though. Thanks.

Thanks, Dave.
Meg got up at 4:30 this morning to go to Ground Zero and serve as an usher at the ceremony. I spent most of the day watching that. Those kids who were reading the names really got to me.
It's different when you live here. Tough to explain, but it's just more personal.
Thanks to everyone for helping the children of this City. That's how you fight back against the madness of that act. At least it is for me. Thanks.Retired and loving it.0 -

Sort of an education habitat for humanity. Keep us posted on the kids there "Captain"0 -
Strangers.
Meg just got back and told me a story. Right after the ceremony, she and her co-workers went to a restaurant for lunch. Meg had to go to the Ladies, which was downstairs. The Eagles song, Desparado, was playing on the juke. When Meg got downstairs she found a woman sitting on the floor, crying like a child. Meg asked what was wrong and the woman told her that that song had been her husband's favorite song. So Meg sat on the floor with the woman and hugged her for a while. Then she brought her upstairs and they all sat and remembered. Strangers helping strangers.
It's personal here, folks, and we are all so very fragile.
Thanks.Retired and loving it.0
