Need a favor

Is there anyone out there that might have 2 or 3 Weil-McLain Alumipex 1/2" splice fittings sitting on their shelf that they would like to move out? Perhaps one of my RPA bretheren. Siggy, Hotrod, Mark E.,& Paul P.? Where are you? Not off to Wetstock III or ISH yet I hope. You know the deal guys. All these things are available if you have time on your side. Lots of supply houses can "order" them for me, but few are stocking much these days. "Got'em on the line card" they might say. Come through and next time we meet you won't have a bar tab.

    You could

search for Wirsbo MultiCor couplings, I'm pretty sure, except for the color, it's the exact same tube.

    splice fittings

    Rick,
I have three (650-000-132) 1/2" couplings. I will loan them to you and you can return them when your supply comes in.

    Sorry pal...

I don't use that particular brand of tubing. If I did and I had spare fittings you would be welcome to them though...

I'd follow up on HR's lead. Wirsbro has LOTS of different fittings for theirs.

    Thanks for the responses

Thanks for getting back so quickly. Hotrod, I had the same idea that a Wirsbo MultiCore fitting might work and that was going to be my dropback option. As you might see, one of us has come through for me and I have something to put a bounce in my step today.

You mean I can use Wirsbo fittings

on thw Weil/Mclain alumipex tubing? That would be great news. I squashed a few of the W-M fittings until we figured out that the instructions that came with the W-M fittings were wrong. Said to tighten till 3 threads were showing. And no one has the W-M fittings but will of course order them at a inflated cost. Got so fed up with these fittings I am doing the rest of the rads in copper.

    Never liked the Weil fitting

It was hard to know if the tube was inserted into the sleeve far enough. You almost had to put a pencil line on the tube to assure you were engaged. Hard to do on black pipe!

The threads were funky also. Maybe it had to do with the plating or maybe the European thread pitch was off a tad. Also it is easy to confuse the MIP end with the straight thread end.

My understanding is if the listing (ASTM)on the various tube brands and the listing on the fitting are the same, they should swap. Tolerance wise.

Certainly manufactures would prefer to see you use their specfic fitting, and it may effect the warranty on the "system". But as you, too, have discovered they are not always available, at a moments notice. I'm not sure many radiant companies even make their own fittings.

I think fitting tolerance is easier to maintain than tubing OD and ID spec's. I think all manufactures struggle with tube out of spec, ocassionally. At least that has been my experience :)

    W/M alumiPex fittings

I have not had any problem with W/M fittings (supply or mechanical). Reaming the tubing properly is important and simple, then push the tube in 'till it won't go in any more.

    For future consideration

You might want to look at Stadler-Viega tubing. Their regular Pex and their PAP product use the same fitting. I don't think anyone here would argue about the quality of their tube either. Just a thought.
