draining compression tank

MT TANK IS FILLED TO TOP AND I WOULD LIKE TO REMOVE SOME WATER AND CREATE THE AIR CUSHION BUT HAVE NO VALVE -JUST A PLUG IN THE TANK BOTTOM (TANK SUSPENDED IN CEILING).MY QUESTION IS --CAN I REMOVE SOME OF THE WATER BY REMOVING OR PARTIALLY REMOVING THIS PLUG[AFTER CLOSING COLD WATER FEED TO BOILER]WITHOUT DRAINING ENTIRE OLD FASHION RADIATOR HOT WATER SYSTEM????
TANK HAS NEVER BEEN DRAINED IN 40 YEARS.

If the conclusion is that the tank needs to be drained......One way you can drain your tank is to attach a hose to a drain valve located somewhere lower than the tank in the heating system. Yes shut off the feed valve and any isolating valves that cut off the zones. Open the drainvalve to first drop pressure , then crack open that plug in the bottom of the tank . As the water in the system drains out , air will suck back into the tank...Drain until the proper amount of water is drained. Or listen for the air in the tanks riser.

Seems odd that there is no drain in the tank. Is it a 1/2" tap ? What is connected between the tank and the system ?

You must drain tank til m/t , then open valves tank will seek ..

it's proper level. If you don't drain til m/t you will be doing it again next month. John@Reliable

    I was looking

through a catalogog and found an expansion tank drain valve. It has a shut off, drain and vacuum breaker all built in. Seem if you install one of these you it would pay for itself many times over. Personally I would put in a new tank with a diaphram and be done with it. WW

    B&G Drain-O-Tank Valve

Isolate the tank, dope up a DT-2 (Drain-o-Tank valve), put a bucket under the plug and open enough to dribble out water to get a vacuum on the tank. Then pull the plug and install the DT-2. You won't make a mess.
The DT-2 has an air inlet tube that goes to the top of the tank, and a drain that takes water from the bottom.
This will enable you to drain the tank until empty..
