Question for TImmie

Can the new Nitride type hot surface ignitors be used indescriminently as replacements on gas fired appliances equipped with regular Silicone Carbide ignitors??

Howzzat for a mouthful??

Does a person have to consider warmup times and are there different nitride type ignitors available to accomodate those??

Thanks Pal

  • Silicon Nitride Igniters

The kit that comes from White Rodgers seems to include quite a few replacements. I do not feel it is a good idea to use it universally unless it is listed in the kit instructions. As far as warm up time the nitride igniters have a very short warm up time so even if your module was a 20 second warm up the nitride would fit in fine with that.

The Robertshaw catalog which distributes for Norton lists some 600 series igniters, but it seems they also a very specific as to what they replace.

I communicate back and forth with some folks from Norton, in fact some have been to my classes. I will touch base with them about what the future offers as far as universal replacement.

One of the problems I see is the different bracketing required and positioning in the burner area for safe ignition.

Feed back from those who have installed the kit is that frequent problems with the old carbide igniters disappeared when the new igniters were installed.
