Radiant and carpet

Wondering what size pad is good for radiant floors as the carpet is being installed tommorrow and the carpet contractor said that he is using 1/2 pad. This is what he has always used in this area (upstate NY) and has not had a problem. I have spoken with other contractors to get a bid on carpet installation and they were all going to use the same pad 1/2. Any info is appricated Thanks Fred

Sponge Cushion makes a synthetic rubber pad that has a low R-value. Their website is www.sponge-cushion.com.

I've never used their product, but I have the literature.

    Not much time

to change your mind! There are a number of radiant specfic pads products an the market. Typically the bonded, multi colored foam pad is so, so. If the load and calcs show the system will heat adequately with the actual pad and carpet going in, then good enough.

You want to be careful not to raise the supply temperature above what the subfloor, carpet and pad manufactures recomend to achive the needed output. The design should spell this out for you.

The radiant specfic pads are a little more R-value friendly
