Hartford Loop

Last year I had a new steam boiler installed in a three family house that I rent out. It is a single pipe system. The system has been squirting water out of the radiator vents. I contacted a service company that is supposed to be steam experts. They did not install the boiler. They said that I need a Hartford Loop and some piping reworked on the boiler and that it would cost $3,000. This is more than the boiler cost. Isn't this excessive? Is there a person in Monmouth County NJ that you could reccomend for a second opinion. The person I got the estimate from was ITAK, out fo ocean county.

sounds normal
sounds normal but most guys don,t price it to re do the headers properly or they wouldn't get the job i know because i lose jobs all the time because i do fiqure that in the lack of a hartford may indacate that your contractor may not be as versed in steam as he lead you to believed.3000 sounds a little much but could be on for a 3 story building make sure the next guy follows the boilers manafactors header guidelines there in the instruction that came with the boiler if there not following the diagrams get another guy also make sure the guys do it in steel the only reason for doing it in copper is lack of proper tools and equiptment good luckR.A. That sounds VERY reasonable for the job
my friend, the original installer gave you the screw, not this fella. We often do not get new installations because we are "higher than all the other bids." Unfortunately, the customers learn the hard way after the first heating season. We get calls every year from these folks apologizing for bad mouthing us as "crooks" and not using us in the first place. These are jobs where we spent several hours on the proposal, going thru the house to measure et cetera. Depending on how we feel about the person's attitude, we "MIGHT" come back in to do the correction - if they truly learned their lesson. It's really funny, but I can tell THEM what they paid for the bad job, show them that my price was perfectly in line, if they had the job done right. Sir, you got the screw once, don't make the same mistake. I would get a few references from this new company, call them up, and if all is good go with them. A good piping job will look something like this. The first two are what a good header should look like. The third is the Hartford loop with a nice flushing station on it. The 4th is another good general example. Good Luck Mad Dog

Hartford Loop
You may want to check your legal avenues in your state. Did you pay a licensed contractor??? Did he or you pull a permit? Was it inspected??? A Hartford Loop must be installed, if not it is illegal, no? How much money did you save?? Now you have to pay some one to do it right. Sorry, tiome to pay the piper.0 -
And
any steam contractor worth hiring will get a piping diagram from the boiler's manufacturer and follow it to the letter.
You may want to look at the Find a Contractor page of this site to see if anyone on there is close to you.
