troubleshooting home gas central heating issue

It would appear that you have shorted out your control system. At a minimum, you have burned out your low voltage transformer suppling power to your thermostats and pump relay's and/or zone valves, and also your new thermostat. You may have also damaged other components in the system pertaining to the other zone, such as the other thermostat.

I highly doubt that it is as simple as replacing a fuse, as most low voltage systems don't have fuses, and if it did, you most likely wouldn't have seen the bright blue flash of light as the fuse would have blown instantly. It sounds like you have some knowledge of electricity, but don't know or understand the different components you have operating your system. I would HIGHLY recomend that you count your losses and get a contractor in to go over every part in your system one at a time until your system is back up and running. I'm afraid that if you continue trying to diagnose this you will wind up burning out more components and ulitmatly making this a more complicated and expensive problem for yourself.

If you insist on continuing your diagnosis, you will need to provide the brand and part numbers of your thermostats, relays, transformers, zone valves, and any other electrical components on your system. Also a Model and Serial # of your boiler would be helpfull, or better yet, post some pictures of your system and thermostats for you best help from "The Wall"

    Home Gas Central Heating Issue

    Hello,

Can anyone suggest a resolution to this....
I have gas central heating system with 2 room thermistats, 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs. The downstairs was faulty so I replaced it with a different thermostat. The faulty thermostat had 1 neutral wire and 2 live. The replacement one had only 2 points so I connected the neutral to neutral and both the live wires to the other point. When I reconnected the power supply and turned the room stat on it blew, with a bang and a flash of blue. The gas boiler will still fire up but the upstairs room thermistat will not fire the radiators. There is a pump? in the airing cupboard that has a manual / auto switch. It had been set to auto but won't work since the termostat blew. If I switch it to manual it will work.
My question is, and I'm hoping that someone can help me is, what do I need to buy to get it back up and running. Is it a new room thermostat and a pump or a fuse or something else altogether?
Please help !! I'm getting cold!

    What kind of .....

zone valves... sounds like you might have an Auto mag system. If so... a standard t-stat will not work..

    Alot more info

If we knew exactly what system you had it would help. If there was a flash you shorted something, perhaps the only thing to die was the stat, perhaps not. Since you mentioned pump I'm guessing a gas fired boiler, if this is true it sounds like you had 2 - 3 pole stats. Now we need to know which zone valve, common 3 pole are automag and a White Rogers model. Either way I would just take the working stat to someone who would sell you another one, some wholesalers will. Or, just call a contractor, tell him what you fried so he can bring one with and hope for the best.

    BTW....

Rule #1 of Basic Electricity: Never connect a neutral to a switch. The thermostat is a thermally activated switch.
