sizing a replacement oil burner

my location. The local HVAC contractor who installed central air in this house told me I had a hot water system not steam, but would be happy to sell me a new oil burner. He obviously is not much of a PRO. Not to beat a dead horse but don't see many alternatives other than to try an informed repair on my own. Any other suggestions for finding help?

    sizing a replacement oil burner

I would like some suggestions for sizing a replacement oil burner on a 2 pipe steam vapor system. The house is a two story brick veneer, 1260 sq. ft. per level with a total of 45 old windows. Location is the NW corner of Missouri. The steam boiler is a National - U.S. all fuels boiler "37" series capable of producing 900 sq ft of steam and 239,000 btu oil fired. The steam system uses a hoffman differential loop and hoffman steam traps on each radiator. The main and return line are approximately 120 feet in length. The current burner is a National oil burner with 2 1.5gph 80degree nozzles. The square feet of EDR for the first level is 351 and 279 EDR for the second level. All of the original radiators are still in use but typically run with the hand valve at 50% or less on the second level. What size and/or model of oil burner would be appropriate for this system?

P.S. is their a suitable oil burner for this boiler which would produce a flame pattern of less than 10 inches inside the firebox?

JW, you really need a PRO for this job

I know I keep saying this but it's true. Replacing an oil burner has to be done "just so".

I can tell you that the firing rate will be roughly 80% of what it now is, because newer burners get more heat out of every drop of oil. And the flame length and width is dictated by the nozzle installed in the burner.

We have people here on the Wall who swear by every make of burner out there- Beckett, Carlin, Riello, whatever. But no burner will work right unless it's installed correctly. That's where a pro comes in.

Go to the Find a Contractor page of this site to locate a pro near you.

    Any NW Missouri Wetheads here?

This gentleman needs you- he's way too far from Baltimore for me to change his burner ;-)
