air conditioning (fog) is pulled in through the Golden Gate by the heat in the valley. This is a picture from Mt. Tamalpias in Marin County, just north of the Golden Gate. It's looking southwest over the ocean and you can see on the left where the fog is being pulled into the bay.

When there's a thick marine layer and when it's hot in the valley, everything you see now is covered with the stuff and can extend east 50 miles or more.

Some people hate the fog and move east. I love it because we don't need a/c and a lot of the plant diversity we have is because of the fog; redwood trees wouldn't be here otherwise.

That's the West Point Inn on the hill; they serve a nice pancake breakfast to hikers on weekends and just below the inn is Muir Woods, home to some of the largest redwoods in the world.
