inline thermostat

I was told that my old boiler had a inline thermostat that was probably restricting my flow on the supply side. My loop was not heating up all the way. Sure enough I took it apart tonight and there was one in there. Should I leave it out or look for a replacment? It is an old piece made by Detroit Lubricator Co. Any info would greatly be appreciated...thanks...Jim
