Mold How much
Bill NTSG
Member Posts: 321
With all the rain we had this summer on the east coast I have seen more mold lately than I ever recall seeing in the past. I am a little concerned about my health.
What is the worst color, I have seen black tan grey green blue red etc.etc.?????? Being a "Cellar dweller" we are exposed to more than our fair share of toxins and pathogens. I know the "NEWS" has had articles on this subject in the past.
Any guidelines? How do you know when you should leave the area before you "catch " something?

remediation
We're doing a church right now. Had the mold tested by an independent lab (CYA!) and it's not the nasty stuff. Nice & black though.
Once they realized it wasn't the deadly variety, they opted for UV protection in the air handler and anti-bacterial/mold additives to the new paint in the Sanctuary.

What PAH said
Bill, unless you test the stuff you can't know which mold you are seeing.
Stachybotris Atra is black and it is a NASTY bugger that is harder to remediate than Anthrax, but there are other black molds.
There are worse molds out there with VOC's that are so toxic they would make "Love Canal" look like a health club.
As for your protection, what you can't see can get you too. We cellar dwellars never know what is waiting for us in the dungeons.
About the only thing you can do is wear a GOOD respirator, not a dust mask.
DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!!!!! If you have to work in close proximity to it, spray it with a Bleach/water mixture.
Be careful out there!!

Info about respirators
Mold spores are particles, and vary greatly in size. The best respiratory protection is a hepa plus an ovag (organic vapor/acid gas)cartridge on a half or full facepiece respirator. They are color coded purple and yellow. North, MSA, Willson all make them, try your local supply house, or buy direct at www.directsafety.com Be careful out there!0 -
Molds
Take it from me, protect yourself before it's too late. Over the years your body will get subjected to lot's of allergens in this field and after a while it will say that's it, I'm not taking this any more. Wear protection whenever you do maintenances or change filters, don't throw used air filters around, bag'em. Everyone throws their used filters around. They are full of stuff you don't want to breath and you are making it air borne again.0
