.....something to do with the heat in the air coming off of the ground and the bending of the light coming back to you. I'm surprised that nobody has a comment. I'd like to know the answer.

Which was it that allowed me to "bend" the main line rail with lens and point-of-view? In reality that rail is straight as an arrow.
Darkroom teacher and professional photographer both had to see the location to believe as they knew it wasn't caused by a "flaw" in the F. Zuiko lenses I used...0 -
I'd vote for both..
but not sure why. Interesting things happen through the lens of a camera and some learn to take advantage of them along with the right conditions outside.
