Hot water low-flow

I have very low hot water flow, the water heater is about 3-4 years old. I have no water softener to treat the water. Could my heater or the water lines be plugged? How do I treat the problem?

The problem you describe sounds like the dip tube is falling apart and clogging your lines. This problem was a manufacturing defect that occured in just about every manufacturers' heaters that were produced in 1994-1997. The dip tube would flake off little white speks that would work their way through your piping system and would get stuck in the fauecet aereators, shower heads, washing machine and dishwasher filters. There was a class action lawsuit to remedy this situation, but the time for filing claims has run out. Besides going back to whoever sold you this product and asking for a remedy, I would recommend replacing the unit and flush and clean your lines. Otherwise, you may try removing the rest of the dip tube, replacing it with a new one, and flush and clean, but our experience has shown that this could take a long time to do because there may be a 12 inch or more portion of the tube floating around the bottom of the tank and it will continue to break apart. Good luck with your problem.

  • Good call, Heatermon

I was over at a lady house yesterday where that happened. I cleared the aerators (full of white dip tube remnants) and replaced the Moen 1200B shower valve cartridge and she had plenty of hot water again. I plan to return next week to replace the dip tube.

And she thought I was a genius. Couldn't argue with her.
