H.V.A.C.R.-Heating,Ventilation, and CAT REMOVAL???

I know I have heard stories about this before, but I actually got a call Saturday night for a cat stuck in the ductwork. Get to the house, teenage daughter answers door all frantic. Tells me they had just gotten the kitten that day, and she had crawled down a 2"X10" floor vent where they had left the register out, and the kitty wouldn't come back out. They had actually called 911 and had gotten the P.D. and F.D. to come out too. I went in the crawl and determined which duct she had crawled down. Wound up dropping about 15 feet of 6" round before finding her curled in in a double elbow sleeping. Pulled her out and handed her to the daughter. The best part was the tears of joy from the girl when she got the cat back safe and sound, and the thousand "Thank You's". Another happy customer (or two, in this case) :).

P.S. Another good reason to sell hydronics, pets can't get in those little copper and PEX pipes! ;)

Nice story, Glenn.
Reminds me of two incidents, both involving p-traps.
One was a lost contact lens that the Bride lost on the day of her wedding.
The second was a frantic call from someone who had forgotten that months earlier I had returned her last check because the faucet started leaking again after I had left. Only problem was it was a different faucet. She had lost her diamond ring and I pulled it out of the trap.
It is just amazing to me how many memories come back because of stories on "The Wall". Thanks for these two.
By the way, the joy on both of their faces was payment enough.0 -
Freebies, sort of
I don't work for free. Often, that is.
I handle a good bit of maintenance at 2 restaurants. First free call was in response to a panicked call from the chef. The Ice Machine wasn't making ice and they had a huge party that evening. I drug out of bed that early Saturday morning and drove over. I looked in the ice machine and called the chef over. I reached into the bin, grabbed the water plug and put it back into the sump. The chef was amazed, embarrassed, and almost in shock. Money didn't change hands that time but the breakfast he fixed me was excellent!
Second time was about a month ago. The manager of another restaurant called and said that one of the door hinges on the walk-in freezer (which was inside the walk-in cooler) was broken and to come over as soon as I could. I walked in the store, asked the manager to come help me compare the hinges so I could get the correct set, and proceeded to put the door back on the hinges. That time I got dinner for the family!

herrrrrrre Kitty,kitty,kitty
Renovated an old farmhouse & converted it into an office & clubhouse for an apartment complex, about 15 years ago. Mother cat(wild) had kittens in the crawl space & one of them crawled into a 6" flexible duct. The little guy fought like crazy to stay, even after it was disconnected. Installer was in crawl on his back with little room to manuver trying to pull this kitten out of the duct and he was digging into the flex and hanging on for dear life. I was pleased to see though, that even after he had made ground chuck of part of this installers forearm, he still ended up taking the kitten home to try & domesticate it, I think he must have respected his spunk.
We had to get him out though, even if not for the welfare of the kitten. Had just come off another job where one had perished inside a duct, ended up tearing out ceilings, flooring, and walls in a finished apartment to replace duct. It was the only way to get rid of the odor.0
