I'm just guessing that this steam system was slow to heat since all the air is vented through the individual radiator vents and that's a lot of air.
I'm also guessing that if I remove the nipple and cap and replace it with Hoffman #75, it will make the system more responsive.

Great guessing
It would have been nice to see that nipple back about a foot from the end. If it were, the original vent would probably still be there.
They get pretty hammered, there, and spit. They die early.
Sounds like a party, doesn't it?

Alan, yes a vent would be nice.........
sometimes what we do is to cut back like Noel said 1' and use a portable threader and add a tee for vent. You could also drill and tap a hole in pipe and add a vent,if you don't have room for tall vent use 3,4,5, any number of small main vents piped on a manifold, not has pretty but you will get the same results, check attachment . hope this helps John@Reliable0 -
According to Steamhead....
The largest Gorton radiator vent(D?)has the same venting rate as the Hoffman Number 75.

It does, BP
and the Maid-o-Mist/Jacobus and Armstrong "D" vents are similar.
Alan, what size is that main and how long is it? A single Hoffman #75 may not be enough.....

Oh !
It's a 2" main and the total horizontal length from the boiler is about 80'.

1.84 cubic feet of air
A Gorton #1, or a Hoffman 75, or bigger would do the job.

On a long main like that one
I prefer to use a bigger vent. The reason is that there is more resistance in a long 2-inch pipe than there would be in, say, a 3-inch pipe with an identical amount of air.
I'd use a Gorton #2 on this main.
