ford e-250's

Got a 2001 with a 6 cyl. It does everything I want. Cruises at 70-75. I change oil every 3,000 miles, and rotate tires every 5,000. It won't pull a trailer with out downshifting, but for most of my driving, it's great. My previous van was a '78 with 351, and I don't notice any difference, (except for that trailer thing) The only complaint I have is the paint won't stay on the bumpers...I guess they can't get everything right.

have a truck question
first let me say i know absolutly nothing about vehicles, nor do i want to know...i was on a job today and the electrician on the job said his company has ford e-250 vans with the triton v-8 and two developed serious engine problems about 80k miles..as a triton v-8 owner with only about 45k miles on my truck that scared me..anyone else hear anything like this about these engines in the e-250's? reason i ask is i was going to keep the truck after the lease was up in 9 payments, but if its a problem engine,(hasn't been yet), then i'll turn the vehicle in...any help would be appreciated.0 -
I heard
about that!
I don't think it is a problem on the triton v10's, only the v8's
if its a lease, get out while you can!

Size matters
I've heard "stuff" about the 4.6L but nothing about the 5.4L. We have an F-150 with 100K on it that runs like new. Have never touched the motor other than normal maint.0 -
interesting -
as I have justed looked at a newer ford to replace the faithful 1982 e 250. Seems that number eight plug is a bit---ch to get out and on occassion strips the head. So the 100,000K service now costs big bucks to remove head - helicoil plub thread etc. By all other reports - fuel economy is great, lots of power, AC is OK, and you can pack half the shop before the overloads kick in.
cheers

V8 troubles
May I ask why the V8 in a service van? I have a '98 E-250 with a V6 auto and it's been a gem......it's carrying a heavy load ( both plumbing and heating stock) has 95,000 miles, and get 13-14 mpg. It's no speed demon, but the drive train is as tight and tough as the day I bought it. I was a V8 fan, but I'll never buy another on in a service van. It's a tool box on wheels, not a race machine! And I want my people to get to the job on time and safely, not with tickets or accidents. The V8 does have more power, but isn't necessarily better.

Gerry, I have been using
6 cylinder Ford E-150 and 250 for years. I now own number 14, I run them into the ground (as much as 250,000 miles on several). When I was with the gas company that was all they used for a fleet of 100, most of them today run on CNG. I never found the need for V-8 power the new V-6 I have has plenty of pep and I travel all over the place with lots of weight being carried. The options that they have for cages and shelving is also a plus.
Several local guys with the Triton V-8 have told me they have had noise develop in the engine after about 50,000 miles and Ford has not been able to figure it out. I have coffee at a Dunkin Donuts near home and two service vans with Triton come in there they say they have had no problems and love the extra power they get. It is hard to figure sometimes.
I found that buying the local Ford mechanic a coffee when he is working on my Van gets me some interesting information about problems with certain vehicles. There is something in a cup of coffee that makes people want to talk. HMMMM0 -
I have a diesel
In an F-350. Had another in a 97 F-250. They have been fabulous engines. Great power (towing the 5th wheel and the tool trailer/parts crib is NO problem) The 350 just made 600 miles in one day towing a 30' 5th wheel (think heavy here) First trip was to pick up a bunch of stainless pipe and tubing for my brothers meat plant. (I don't even want to know what that cost) On the second trip we had two 10X14 prefab buildings on the trailer. The steel type buliding you see used as offices on construstion sites. Towed both loads at 70mph on the expressway and the diesel never complained or ran hot. Got 11.7mpg for the day. Both of the trucks average in the high 16 mpg range around here for daily driving.
The service only type vehicle that intrigues me is that Sprinter van Mercedes Benz makes. Fed-Ex and UPS are both driving them. A lot of expiditing companies are using them too. I've been told by those who own them that they will get 19-21 mpg around town and up to 25 out on the highway. HHMMMMmmmm. Where have we seen European products that are more fuel efficient than US products before??0 -
AL
You're right about the high HP motor in a service only vehicle. It's really not needed. Where the V-8's are nice is when the vehicle is used for towing and other heavy use type jobs.0 -
only problem with....
the sprinter or benz was/is the towing capacity. they are rated around 3500lbs. payload but i believe the towing is limited to 5000lbs. not a good choice for what i wanted!! my last ford had the 351 in it and years gone by that straight I-6 was a workhorse.
Murph'0 -
Ahhhh yes
The old 300-6. The store still has one in a 1987 F-250. The speedo quit at 257,000 miles and that was 3-4 years ago. The valve cover has never been off that engine. The rest of the truck is dying/falling apart/rusting away around the engine but I don't think it will ever quit.
Wish they still made that motor.0 -
We had one in a '78 E250
After selling the van, the new owner drove it for a few years then put it in his pickup.0 -
I like the engines, BUT
Hate the transmissions. I had a 2002 with the Triton 5.4 V8, and at about 30,000 miles the transmision started acting wierd, the warning light came on, and it would slip and wouldn't down shift and stall the engine. The head mechanic at the dealership had to go back to the engineer who designed the tranny, who said based on the symptoms and the codes showing, the problem must be one of two parts. By the time this happened and the two parts were ordered, the tranny disentigrated into a thousand pieces. New tranny at 32,000 miles!!!. I now have an 2003½ that I got in April with 6000 miles and am already seeing problems with the Tranny. It shifts real slow when going from drive to reverse or reverse to drive, and sometimes slips going into reverse. It also downshifts into first way to easy, especially with the air on, IMO
Just my 2¢ worth0 -
e-250
I have a 2003 E-250 with a 5.4 or maybe 5.7 ( the big one) v-8, are all 8's Triton V-8's???, I don't have the triton v-8 tag on the front quarter panels.0 -
thanks for the replys guys
its food for thought...i called my mechanic today just to ease my mind, and he said most guys run thier trucks like dogs till the engine goes...but i take really good care of mine,(cause i pay him to do it). He said there is an engine issue with the triton, but he wondered how many bad engines were really not cared for...who knows, guess i'll just keep up the regular maintenance and hope the others guys just had bad luck..0 -
Triton V-8
Have a '99 E350 DRW 14 ft. box with a 5.4 & have no complaints about the motor so far( HATE the cost of a brake job). Buy the 100,000 mile extended drivetrain warranty. I screwed up and did not, cause the girl that normally did the paperwork for the warranties was out on vacation, and I had the truck working 4 hrs. after I picked it up on a friday night, and never went back to buy the damn thing. The dealer that had the truck on the ground was 40 miles away, and I wanted it now. Sometimes you rush you lose.0 -
ford e250's
The 2003 Dodge has the Sprinter. I took it for a test drive and that will be my next truck. Drove alot better than the Ford.0 -
The Triton 5.4 made in '99 has a silent recall on it
The one in my Expedition was replaced at about 29,000 miles. With this recall they would give you a new engine if you had under a certain number of miles when you noticed the problem (it was either 60K or 100K - I don't remember.)
A batch of these '99s had "piston slap". It sounds like the engine is pinging/rattling - especially when when cold in the winter months although mine was noticable in the summer. Eventually this could progress to more serious damage. Ford took good care of my problem and it didn't cost me a penny.

Judging from your email address...... I was wondering how long you've been working for Ford???0 -
No connection to Ford
I don't have any connection to Ford Motor Co. My wife picked that address out years ago because we both liked and drove Fords when we met - and still do.
I have gotten some interesting emails to this address though since Ford doesn't (or didn't) have an email address for customers to contact the company.0 -
My poor 1971 F-100 with 302 V8 and three-on-the-tree just keeps on trucking. Simple enough that even I can work on it for most things with just a Chilton manual, and an engine compartment so large and uncluttered that even I can crawl in if need be.0
