How do YOU define "heat exchanger"? I need a good plain way to describe it for an upcoming discussion.

Thank you.

    Here's a stab at it

Heat exchanger: A device utilized to transfer the temperature or heat from one heat storage medium (fluid, vapor or gas) to another. The two mediums are seperated typically by the wall of a plate or tube. The transfer of heat will always occur from the higher temperature medium to the lower temperature medium.

    Howzat?

    But You Can Also...

...consider an inground swimming pool surface area as a heat exchanger, as well as the outside surface area of a house or other structure, right? How about direct contact heaters like steam to water - where the steam is sparged directly into the water? This is a tricky thing to define :)

Pretty much anywhere you've got a delta-T, you've got heat exchange. (Whether you want it or not.)
