Subject: FW: C-5 Stuck on the Freeway

NORFOLK -- One of the military's largest transports was stuck on a runway atop the I-564 overpass for more than 16 hours today, unable to turn around at the west end of Chambers Field at the Norfolk Naval Station.

The incident, starting about 1 a.m., forced the closing of the field for most of the day to all but helicopter traffic and made for a dramatic sight to hundreds of motorists passing beneath it during the morning rush hour. "That thing's like a big building sitting there.'' said some motorists. The aircraft's nose was so far over the end of the ramp, the crew was unable to see the runway where it was supposed to turn around. The pilot stopped the aircraft and prevented it from running off the ramp. They also stated that it was too tight of a turn to turn the aircraft around.

The Air Force C-5 Galaxy, largest airplane in the free world, is almost as long as a football field and as high as a six-story building. At 420 tons with a full load, it uses a system of 28 wheels to distribute its weight.

The aircraft spent most of the day waiting for a specially made tow bar to be trucked to the base from Dover, Del. The tow bar arrived about noon and was used to hook the C-5 to a tractor so the aircraft could be turned around. The plane was moved off the runway by 4:30 p.m., No one was hurt, and the plane was not damaged.

    It's a Lockheed-Martin special.

When I was stationed at Pease AFB in the 80's as a security specialist I guarded some of these during stop overs, I'm not sure about now but back then this aircraft was classified as a priority 1 asset, same as nuclear weapons and use of deadly force was authorized if someone tried to steal it or hurt them in any way, imagine that.

    I`m lucky enough

to live next to a reserve base here in MA. where they station those behemoths.

They take off and land directly over my house at times and after 13 years here I STILL stop and watch.

If you ever get the chance to see one up close by all means do so, the cargo bay itself is longer than the Wright brothers first flight.

As big and loud as the C-5A can be they can`t compare with the roar of a B-52.

    Saw a

Blue Angels show at Pease in the 80's and it was one of the most phenomenal things I've seen. One jet came from the North with the announcer getting everyone turned that direction. Then "BOOM" three jets flew over our heads from the South at about ten feet (it seemed that low) above the 100,000 folks assembled there. Every single one of us left the runway. I must have jumped at least 10 feet. Amazing show by the USA's best.

They also had a C5 there and it makes you stare and say "It can not get off the ground".

Pease is now a private venture area near Portsmouth N.H. and anyone who has not visited this great city should try and make the trip. It is in constant motion from mid morning till late at night. Just a great family destination for a day or more.

Sorry for the ramble. Could you guess I just returned from a day trip? We have been vacationing in the area for 25 years and yesterday we ate at the Stock Pot, walked downtown, saw Footloose in doors, ate at Rosa's, saw Peter Pan with the Grandkids outdoors and had a short 11/2 hour ride home.

Portsmouth, if your within 2 hours-go and have a great time.

    Northbridge.

I'm 10 miles south of Worcester down Rt. 122.

One thing I forgot to mention-parking in the Public Garage is $0.50 per hour and it is located downtown.

    My wife

and I seem to find a few places and stick to them. Along with the ones above we go to the 50's style restaurant (name escapes me), Annabells for ice cream or Goldies deli.

We actually spend most of our time in York, Me. but always find time to go to the Seacoast Rep and Prescott Park. We'll do the Heritage boat cruise every now and then also.

Just a great city for all.
