Find a Contractor success part two

We finished the steam boiler in Cooperstown today, and we always save the best part for last.

Carrying the old one out! (Sarcasm off)

The customer found us with "Find a Contractor". He relocated here from Maryland.

He new that the old system was inefficient, coal conversion, and wanted to upgrade to a newer, more efficient system. While we were removing the sections today, we noticed that one of them sounded cracked. Sure enough, it was. It probably only leaked when it was hot, but the vermiculite surrounding the combustion chamber was wet.

We replaced all of the air vents on the radiators and added two Hoffman #75's to the mains. There were main vents at one time but some one replaced them with 3/4" plugs. "Cuz plugs is cheeper!"

The over head dry returns were tied together ABOVE the boiler! Not any more!

The previous owner tried zoning the system at one point but only installed ONE zone valve! He told my customers that he could never get the system balanced?!?! Hmmmm.....wonder why.

You can see the bullhead tee that joined the system mains. We split them at the header. There was no hartford loop on this boiler, now there is.

The folks were impressed with how small the new boiler is compared to the old monster. (They didn't have to get the new one into the basement!)

Anyway, thanks to Dan and this site!

Steamhead, the folks want me to e-mail them your info so send it via e-mail to me. They have lots of friends back in Maryland.

  • Ahhh , the old cloverleaf

I love walking into an install and seeing that emblem . What an " Ideal " way to crush some discs and pull a groin ripping it out .

Beautiful steamwork Mark . Doing the whole job in black , including the returns , is a master touch that sets you apart from the rest . Ahh , if I only had the time to do it also . How did you get it to look like theres no thread sealant on the joints ? You gotta show me that trick . Funny coincidence , we installed a V84 steamer today , I'm gonna post some pics too , but sadly the return is copper . Good job Mark .

    Ancient Chinese secret!

    Just kidding!!

First four threads get dope. I turn the brush to the skinny side so it doesn't spread dope every where, then the pipe sucks it in when you tighten it.

Your work is fine Ron. You are the master of fitting boilers where they shouldn't fit!!!!

    Thanks for the kind words!
