one or two risers?, Weil-McLain

Hello. I need to replace the near-boiler leaking-copper (ack) piping on my home's Weil-McLain PEG-50; getting quotes for this work with this site's Find-a-Contractor (great service).
When I look at Weil-McLain's own manual/product literature, one source seems to spec a single (1) 2.5" riser (as a minimum recommended pipe size), while a second source specs two (2) 2.5" risers.
First question: Is it that one 2.5" is the bare minimum, while two 2.5" (or 3") the better thing to do (to lower the steam velocity)?
(fyi, the boiler currently has one riser.)
And second question: Would a dropped-header be going overboard?

you're on the right track
With steam, and anyone's boiler, more is better on the risers and size of them.
A dropped header is needed when there isn't height enough for the risers as specified by the Manufacturer.
They can be used on every boiler, without harm. A dropped header makes connecting the risers much easier, as it adds a swing joint to each riser. It saves enough labor to be worth it without any added cost.
I don't know what the minimum is for that boiler, I know that was the original question.

Steve, the install manual for all EG boilers shows a single 2 1/2" riser, a 2 1/2" header and an 1 1/2" equalizer. You don't need 2 risers until the 85-95 size.

No, you Don't but it will only improve
the quality of the steam. It really depends...a small steam boiler We'll use one riser sometimes, but go either 2 1/2" and in many cases 3" Mad Dog

Steve, if that boiler has two supply tappings
I'd use two risers to the header. And if you don't have enough headroom, a drop header is the solution. Here's one of my favorites- Mad Dog's turn this time.

Yep , like Noel says
Using a drop header makes connecting the 2 risers much easier , and it only cost us 2 street ells . This was our first try at a drop header , and its my preferred method since .
With using the 2nd supply , like others said , it can only help in producing dry steam , slowing the velocity out of the boiler . It always depends on if you have the room and the time . See if you can post some pics of the job when its done , good luck Steve .0 -
