POSSIBLE VIRUS BEING SENT

is available from Symantec
Go here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/

and click the
"Free Online Virus and Security Check" link

Whatever virus protection you use, you should have it check for updates everyday, the default is usually ONCE a week. With Symantec, you can manually run LiveUpdate to pull down the latest updates. Schedule it to run at night if you leave your machine on and you will be all set in the A.M.

    POSSIBLE VIRUS BEING SENT

I received a strange email from HeatBoy this morning stating to click on the attached file for details. I have not heard back from him yet but I am almost certain that it is a virus. I just received a second email from an address I did not recognize. Make sure your virus software is updated and be carfull of what you open up
  • I've been receiving

that message for better than 3 weeks. Always the same message regarding a movie file. All of them from people here on the wall. Welcome to the internet and be careful partner. Even those you trust can have their names used in these nuisance viruses without ever knowing it. I would also suspect that my name has also been attached to some of these unknowingly because I get messages regarding undeliverable messages that I know I never sent. Rule of thumb....if you aren't expecting anything from someone you know, then delete it!

    Are you guys running

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express?

If so, that's part of the problem. These are two of the most insecure programs ever written. Many viruses written these days are written specifically for these and other Microsoft programs, since Gates & Co. are more concerned with bells & whistles than security.

This is one of many reasons I run Netscape.

I don't run either MSIE or OUTLOOK. I send and receive all of my e-mail through our secure server at Burnham via a network connection. All of the infected files are killed before I receive them by the firewall we run. I have just learned to spot the junk anyway. Our network programmers and maintainance folks alert us whenever a new virus comes around with desriptions and what to look for anyway. Just to be safe anyway, I also run Norton Antivirus and update it regularly. You can count on nothing being idiot proof because there will always be a better idiot!

    The Best

virus program I have ever run is Norton. I run SystemWorks which includes their virus scanner. I run on Auto Protect and run Auto E-Mail scan, been very lucky so far. Hit but never infected.
I use Kazaa quite abit, been hit numerous times, never once has Norton let them through.

    That's a good one, Glenn

I'll have to remember it. And I'm sure Burnham's IT staff is as good as its boilers. I assume you're using a non-Microsoft e-mail client, like Netscape, Pegasus or Eudora.

Internet Explorer and Outlook/Outlook Express are a virus writer's dream, as are most Microsoft programs. That's why I use Netscape and WordPerfect. Why increase the risk?

There's nothing you can do in IE/OE that you can't do in Netscape, Mozilla or Opera. There's nothing you can do in Word that you can't do in Corel WordPerfect or Lotus WordPro. There's nothing you can do in Excel that you can't do in Corel Quattro Pro or Lotus 1-2-3. I could go on..........

We Wallsters howl loud and long if a heating or plumbing product proves troublesome, and we stop using such a product if the manufacturer doesn't correct the problems. We need to do the same with other products, like computer software. Microsoft might even take notice if we start switching to other vendors' software.

    Happenin here

I get them too, addressed from people here on the wall. Dan may want to check to see if his address book/contributor list has been raped by a virus.

It's not coming from me, Bryan.

A worm virus uses addresses from the address books of unprotected computers. If my address is in their book and the worm gets in, it's going to send it to everyone in that book. Everything that comes and goes from here gets scanned.

Best protection is have up-to-date virus software. I have it set to automatically update each night. It's not coming from me.
    Retired and loving it.

Dan after we talked about it, it made sense to me that it didnt come from your computers. Everyone needs to make sure they run there virus software so we can get this thing cleaned up. Make sure you back up your files
