    domestic waterline in concrete

looked at a job today installing heat in a an apartment above a garage owners father had started remodeling job 6 yrs ago he poured a concrete pad 4 ft thick between the garage and the house he ran a 1 in copper water line inside 2in pvc where it exits the house its 3ft below grade where it enters the garage its only 12in below grade the pad was poured with the idea of building an addition onto the house now thats on hold my question is in new england will the copper line be adversly effected by the freezeing weather and cold and how to protect it ?

12" below grade in NE is trouble. Once that pad ( is it really 4ft thick ? ) starts to get cold Nothing is going to warm it up.

Can you pull the copper water line and run a heat tape with it ? Heat tape and insulation is the only thing I can think of, short of running a new line. I would never allow a service to be less than 31/2 feet around here.

Can you say " last winter ".

    Good Luck

    Scott
