run some cast Iron baseboard for ya...that old steam stuff ain't worth fixin'....isn't "efficient" anyhow ..." was probably how the conversation went. These steam floor convectors were not getting hot, and rather than replace the trap elements or the whole trap altogether, they ran cast Iron baseboard, When we pulled the traps out, it was obvious these had never been serviced at all....couldn't even get the caps off...notice how the new hoffman 17c is a has a lower profile. A 750 bill, but it would have been cheaper than the baseboard job. Oh well. Mad Dog

Int it the truth
There's the right way to fix anything, and then there's the "unknowledgable about this, but I can make a good buck way"0 -
When you know
what you're doing, everything else looks stupid.
Nice work, Mad Dog.

And you're ONLY ignorant...
...if you're too proud to question and too lazy to study.0 -
So what are they using now - the cast iron baseboard or the floor convectors? Or both? Sounds like they had 2 options and payed for both of them.0 -
Ancestry
Looks like a prehistoric radiant floor heat component???0 -

Hey Mad Dog
How many knuckles did you bust putting those puppies in ? 750 ? Isn't quality priceless ?Great call . The folks having the problem will call you next time . Someone gave them goods they didn't need , due to ignorance and they're now in the "DOG HOUSE". Chris.0 -
Did you
use a basin wrench to fit up the trap? Cool!!

Wedding ring ?
I liked the pics of the floor steam heat!. I did see you wearing a wedding ring! Ouch. they have a way of getting caught in a fall and removing the finger. They have a way of getting across the hot and neutral wire or a capacitor and turning red hot. Wrist watches the same. I have seen to much of this, (not me). Please be careful out there!

Tried a basin wrench and bent the handle
had to take out the 3 convectors completely...wasn't too bad. Md

Good reminder.
Had a fellow service man leave his finger in the Duce and 1/2 when his ring got caught on the tailgate on his way out of the truck.
Still couldn't take mine off though. Even after all the solder that has fallen in there. Luckily, since changing professions, there is nothing hot coming out of a drafting pen or a keyboard mouse. :-)0 -
not too bad I was careful

We'll see what winter brings.......................
they have a choice...the convectors look like they can just about meet the whole load - I'm sure they did for years while they were working. Mad Dog

Like my
Wife said "Nothing like a wedding band to stop circulation!"So she placed the darn thing in my nose! I have never had a problem, I'd rather not die in a manner only she could figure out. All kidding aside, they are dangerous, as we all know .Be careful out there! bigugh0 -
Wedding Bands
May the circle never be broken.
Two incidents I have had with my wedding band in 42 going on 43 years of marriage.
1. I was playing basketball after work in an industrial league, went up for a rebound and got my ring caught in the net and near tore my finger off (who says white men can't jump)
2. Working putting in a boiler and bringing it down the cellar stairs pinned my hand against the wall and broke my ring finger. As it swelled up my partner cut it off with a hack saw. Finger healed - got ring repaired put it right back on.
With all of that I still never take it off.0 -
MD-

She's a vapor system now....Steamhead
Yeah, she was, house was built 1909 by Mr Jones (of Jones Beach Fame)Of course they had 2 pressuretrols on the boiler doing nothing really...2 Hoffman 75s that were hardly doing a thing 1 - 1 1/2 hours to get all the rads hot. 4 Huge 3" MAINS feeds the house...2 loops seals. Also had one rad that never got hot, everyone gave up on it. We got that one hot too - red hot. Got it down to 35 minutes to heat everything. guy's happy. sorry put in a wrong picture - a snowmelt job we are doing. Mad Dog

The Dead Men are smiling...........
Beautiful Job!
Figure on cleaning the water side of that boiler sometime during the next heating season. Those new vents and traps mean the steam circulates a lot faster now, which will wash a LOT of dirt into the boiler! I usually have the HO watch the water in the glass and call if it starts turning brown or bouncing a lot.
