I entered The Wall this evening...

and found all the settings out of norm. Went to options and found I had hydronicsmike settings, including font size and threads, e-mail and signature, and I lost all my bookmarks, too. I adjusted them back to my settings and started to read some posts. I then found out I mysteriously had Timmie McElwains settings and e-mail now on options. Anyone else having a problem? Dan, got any idea's?

    Thanks, Glenn.

    Might be a virus

especially if you're running Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Outlook Express- two of the most insecure programs ever written. This is why I use Netscape.

Update your anti-virus signatures and scan your hard drive(s). If this doesn't help, go to

    http://housecall.antivirus.com/

which is Trend Micro's online virus-scanning site. I think it's still free to use.

    Thank's, Dan and Frank,

My Norton's 2003 was updated this morning automatically and is still current. I am doing a virus scan as we speak. Will post if anything comes up. I just don't understand how I absorbed somebody else's cookies, twice. I can understand loosing my cookies, but getting somebody else's seems impossible to me. By the way S.H., I am running I.E. 6.0 and have MSN for my provider, probably a double whammy? Well at least I'm not using AOL anymore.

    modify your virus update schedule

Whatever virus protection you use, you should have it check for updates everyday, the default is usually ONCE a week. With Symantec, you can manually run LiveUpdate to pull down the latest updates. Schedule it to run at night if you leave your machine on and you will be all set in the A.M.

A free Online Virus and Security Check is available from Symantec

    Go here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/

and click the "Free Online Virus and Security Check" link

    You

could have been hit with a JS ( java script)virus, or more precisly, a trojan horse.
I kept getting hit with JS.Exception.exploit.
Problem is it dosen't have to be loaded to your drive to affect you, it will run a script. You have to have Auto Protect Enabled on your virus scanner to pick up on some of these, if you scan you will not find anything. Norton anti-virus comes with a script blocking feature. I run all these features now, though it will limit your ability to load certain sites.
Go to their web site and look-up JS viruses. And if you haven't yet, make up a set of back-up disc for Norton AV, boot from them and they will check all system files before they are used and locked by the system and can't be scanned.

You guys should run the free online scan. Alot of times if your machine is infected the virus will hide itself from your virus software, and it doesnt matter what program you are running. Most of the time the online scan's will pick up the virus that your virus software didnt catch. What kind of sites are you guys going to that you are getting these viruses? :)

    Options

    Hello Guys,

same problems on my end. Options have changed and I took on someone elses name. It appears to be a local problem over at Dans end. Can't be that all of our computers are affected by viruses.

I come on here from 2 seperate computers and they both have the same issue, but are using different operating systems and browsers.

    Me, too...

I'm listed as Hydronics Mike (before I changed it above)...and I can edit nearly every post in this thread.

While I could have some MAJOR fun with this, I will abstain...keeping myself out of trouble.

    Take Care, PJO

PAT, YOU MEAN YOU CAN DO THIS? >hydronicsmike :)

    Update

Lisa had the guys clear the cache for the whole site, which means that any bookmarks you had are now gone. My apologies for that. It was necessary to fix the glitch that some of you have been experiencing.

What's at the root of the problem is the cookies that hold your name and email address. They're unique to each person's computer. If you cut and paste a URL from a Wall post and send it to someone your name and email address also travel with that unique URL. If the person receiving your email containing that post uses that URL, the sender's name and email address will stay with it. Long story short, but that's what's going on, and also why it's affecting some, but not all, of us.

    Sorry for the inconvenience!

Just wanted to say Thanks to Dan, Lisa, and the other folks at Invision who addressed this so quickly. It's good to have The Wall back to normal.

Getting e mails from other address's

I have ben getting zip files from some of the address's people use on this site. The zip file contains a virus. It is difficult to open. Do not open it. By the way anything from me i mean from me oh from who ever may not be me. I plead the fifth. I am all zipped up. Ha. See ya
  • change something

use an address with an extra dot in it, or something obvious to anyone writing to you.

My problems COMPLETELY went away after I did this. All those garbage e-mails stopped coming, and my cookies got left alone.

Get rid of your old cookie before you try it.
