We used a Peerless ECT 4
to replace it . We used the 2 header tappings and twinned them into a 3 inch header , and ran each main into it individually .0 -
Dont mind Kenny
He always does this right when I'm taking the pic . This shows where we placed the main vent on the dry return - above Kenny's head .
The serviceman , John , said he went back to this job a few months later and found that the main that is connected to the pipe with the dry return , and all the rads on that main , filled with water . He wanted to know how this can happen . The whole house was a hodgepodge of radiation - some regular sectionals , some 1 1/4 fin tube baseboard , and some regular 3/4 baseboard upstairs , and one bathroom had just a 2 inch riser with a vent in the middle of it . We replaced about 4 vents on some of the rads when we installed the boiler . We were going to try to replace the vent on the other main that had a wet return , but it was buried in a wall . Any ideas ? Thanks guys .0 -
That Peerless
does a nice job of producing steam. Nice looking.

Buried Main Vent
Ron, we usually install some sort of access hatch where a main vent is buried. Many times a small, thin piece of plywood works well, or you can get prefabricated units from suppliers. This preserves access to the vent so we can get at it if needed.

Yes , I like them too
I worked in NYC for about 10 years installing Peerless steam almost exclusively , and in that time we probably had to replace a handful of the old JOT line . They make a very tough , forgiving boiler . Thank you David .0 -
When he went back
John told the homeowner to open up the wall so he could change the buried vent . Before that , you could just make out where it was - someone tapped a 2 inch ell and used a 1/8 inch nipple and it looked like a regular radiator vent . I'm not sure what John did about that vent , but the problem side of the system was on the main with the dry return and the main vent I added at the boiler . My best guess is that one of the rad vents was open for steam and got stuck closed somehow , trapping condensate in the rad and the main with vacuum . But John said the rads and dry return were totally filled with water . I remember looking at the main , and it did have a good pitch down back to the return .0 -
