the glass area and lack of insulation are driving his fuel cost. Upgrading the equiment type and brand won't fix this, as you know. Probably looking at the efficiency differences between the equipment.

Is his abode comfortable at those fuel costs? Make sure he doesn't spend a lot of lettuce and not fix an uncomfortble home.

Any way to beef up the building efficiency? That's the best place to start shaving operating costs.

I need some ammunition here. One of my customers is an architect and owns a fancy house in a fancy neighborhood. He has an old copper tube radiant system; 4,000 [] house, high ceilings, lots of floor-to-ceiling glass and no insulation; cast iron boiler (210,000 BTU input). He says his bills are $800-$900 during the winter.

I have proposed a Vitodens boiler telling him about all the benefits of outdoor reset and increased efficiency. And all he wants to know is how long it will take for the boiler to pay for itself.

Of course, there are other benefits from increased efficiency such as reducing the consumption of a non-renewable resource and reducing harmful emmissions, etc., but the first thing on most people's minds is money.

What would you tell this guy? Paul Pollets: you sell a lot of Viessmann equipment. How would you approach this customer?

    Best wishes,

    Alan

    Pay back time frame???

I never discuss payback time frames because it's too long of a period (of time) and it puts the customer in the wrong frame of mind (cheap, cheap, cheap).

Instead I look at the cost difference between the alternatives, the annual fuel usage costs and then divide that into the difference in up front costs to show them their ROI (return on investment). Everyone's familiar with the stock market and longing for those 21% ROI days. Well, they're baaaacccckkk when you judge radiant systems this way. The one I did today comes up to 57% ROI when compared to scorchie at the exact same operating AFUE efficiencies! That's every year on into infinity & tax free too. Even at its best, the stock market paled by comparrison.

    roi

How do you come up with your roi exactly? I am asked this question all the time, and you seem to have come up with a good answer. Would you mind explaining how you come up with
    it?

    Thanks

how old is the boiler? you might save him 20-25% just by installing the boiler. remember to check the chimney, as it might need a liner now with the high(er) efficiency boiler.
