Had to Reset my Buderus/BF3...Ideas?

Ditto on the Tiger Loop. Not enough people using them. They work great. Use them on every outdoor tank. Helps with cold oil too. Just remember to put the oil filter and firevalve in the supply before it. Seen quite a few with the filter at the pump and the Tigerloop full of sludge. sigh. I'm an HVAC Instructor and I'm having my class install one tomorrow so they'll now and understand them.
Good Luck.

Have a brand new Buderus G115/21 with a Riello BF3 (recalling model from memory....) with the direct vent setup, Tekmar 363 controller. Plumbed primary/secondary, all the good stuff I learned here.

So the other night the DHW was at about 86 degrees and the 363 was running the Boiler pump and the DHW pump...and calling for the boiler to fire. But no fire. The fan was running in the burner...could here it...but no fire. According to the 363, it was in this state for some 13 hours or so...

I pushed the reset button in on the BF3 and the blower stopped when pushed in...but no fire on release. Did this again and it failed. I turned the power off to the burner and then back on...and it seemed to do a prepurge then fired right up. Not sure what the prepurge time is...but I'd guess the fan blew for 10-30 seconds...then fired.

    Any ideas what's up?

YES, I will talk with my professional installers. I don't know if the BF3 has any type of "diagnostics" or not. Nothing obvious to me...the vent was not blocked, etc.

This is one reason I wanted to pay for the installation...and I'm glad I did every step. I learned a ton of stuff working at the side of an experienced fellow!

    Thanks.

    sounds like...

the k7r post purge thing again....they had a real problem w/ that a year or so back...said it was fixed...hmmm...maybe not. Riello is a great product but I won't use the bf3 because of this problem...i much prefer the Carlin p-10 ez. My 10 cents. kpc

PS.- which vent set up did you use? The concentric(1 hood for intake and exhaust)(Field) type can suck in combustion air and give you reset problems too.

    BF3

They do that, stay in pre-purge if they do not light or something acts up. With the weather we have been having any power outages or T-storms ? that might have effected your control? Did you set the burner up with test equipment? Sometimes you just have to open up the electrode gap , sounds too simple I know but look at that. New to you but how old is the burner and K7R post purge relay? Like already stated by the other post there was a problem with an early version that had a bad component. And is it wired correctly? You need power from L1 as well as power from B1 for the post purge cycle. If you are aware of this disregard but I have found 3-4 wired wrong so far [by field electrician or plumber] Lastly look over at oil tech talk for an answer. copy and paste http://disc.server.com/Indices/24736.html
  • Your stuck in post purge mode

As Kevin has stated, there were a whole bunch of problems with the BF3 burner. All of these problems were because of (bad) pre/post purge control K7R relays.

The problems that happened most often to us is the burner would not come out of the post purge cycle. "blower stays on forever" untill power is interrupted to the K7R relay circuit. Burner reset button will not do this.

Buderus actually recalled these relays and will send you a new one for free if you got one of the potentially defective units.
If you call Buderus,1-800-283-3787 and give them the serial number off your K7R relay they can tell if you got one of the series in wich they had problems with.

They take only a few minutes to replace. A couple wire nuts and screws and you're done. Do not forget to program the fan run times on the new relay. Instructions should be included with the new K7R.

That Buderus/Riello dirrect vent kit is a nice setup if you've got no chimny. I put one in for the family.

    I hope this helps.

    I just have to ask......

did your boiler get tuned up? This requires instruments to test the flue gas, stack temp. etc., and I have seen a number of installers who don't do that part of the job. It won't run efficient or clean for very long if it isn't, and maybe even why it shut down.
I hav done a number of the BF burners/ Buderus combinations in the last year and it seems to me that the problem has been taken care of with the purge control.
Could also easily be air in the fuel line if its that new of a startup, and the line was not purged good enough.
Is the fuel tank at the same or higher elevation, as the oil burner. The Reillo is a great burner, but does not handle lifting the oil very well, with a single pipe system. If its air related a tigerloop works great to solve that problem.

hiya i don;t know if this may help you at all, a bad photocell will cause this,a bad cell can cause the burner to run on pre purge all day long,or is breaking down which can cause an intermitent breakdown.the only trouble is that on pre purge if the solonoid allows any oil to seep past can fill the chamber up,are all the terminals nice and tight,is the photcell nice and clean, good oil flow vacuum etc, with these faults always went through the basics first,as just changing parts for the sake of it is a waste.try the basic things first then if all fails call a tech in to run over the whole boiler for you,

hope you didn;t mind me saying and that it may be of some use to you

    all the best

  • I had that happen once at my house

Not a BF3 , it is an F5 . I ran dry of oil over the winter , and when I got the fill up I changed the 2 filters , strainer and nozzle . Somehow I knocked loose some lint from inside the F5 and it bunched up near the nozzle . The burner itself stayed in prepurge for about 2 minutes ( I just wanted to see if it would go off - it didnt ). I took out the assembly to see if the electrodes were touching something and noticed the lint , which I cleaned . Next try it started up fine . Now , Im not sure if it was the lint or maybe the control wasn't set back in right after the nozzle change . Would a piece of lint big enough stop a spark from going across , and keep the burner in prepurge ?

Thanks for all the replies guys! Yes, the setup is the Field concentric intake/exhaust piece. Oil tank sits near the boiler on the same level.

The install was done by a fellow I have come to trust and respect without question...so I'd be amazed if he didn't tune the burner...but I will ask. No simple task by the way to earn that unquestioned respect...LOL.

The 363 is wonderful...so nice to be able to monitor all the run and cycle times. I think next I'll have to hook up a bunch of thermistors or something to my mixing loops, supply, return, DHW, etc. just to record on a PC all the doings and going on. I'll make it all net accesible...so you too can view! LOL

On that note, when will Tekmar provide this in their series of stuff? Not much of a technology leap...and then the control can call for service BEFORE 2AM on that cold winter night...

    Thanks again!
