Sorry Dead Men

The guys setting my condensor and running the lineset up to the attic gave me dirty looks when I brought them a piece of cardboard and asked them to put it between the condensor and their tools.

    abandoning the steamer...

I'm gonna disappoint the dead men and a few of you with this story and pix but thought you might like to see a few pictures.

The customer, and he's a strange bird, has a 120+ year old house with steam heat. Also has forced air on the 1st floor which isn't used. He wants to get rid of the old radiators so despite a modern boiler, out they go. The forced air system has modern ducts so we can reuse. The furnace is a Williamson coal furnace installed in the late 50s according to the city inpection tag. Going to put a Ruud Modulating 94% furnace so as close as we can get to hydronic comfort with scorched air. Upstairs, going to use a (gasp) heat pump with variable speed air handler.

Found the remains of an old boiler downstairs too!

Forget the heating system for a minute

Check out the gutters:) Can you get a close up of the gutters. Also, I noticed the cross brake on the inside radius of the duct to the left of the furnace. This isn't the first time I've seen this, why is this being done? it is not necessary on radius bends. The cross brakes are for stiffening up the metal especially of wider lengths...to stop the noise from the expansion and contraction of the metals as the system is under presure and/or the volocity of the air flow in general(There are other things to think of when using wider lengths that are covered in smacna duct design manual)Just courious if anyone knows why this is done on these fittings?

    What a moron. Oh well.

And I'm going to kill someone at my internet portal. It's taking anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to load an image tonight.

    The house is in

Downtown Indianapolis. The inside is a mess but sure looks neat from the outside.

Say, you're only a couple hours from Louisville...

Maybe you could help those folks out that have posted looking for a steam contractor. I'm going to be going through Indy and then down near Louisville in a few weeks.
