i ran into a situation today where the customer wanted an estimate on replacing a old williamson furnace. well, the williamson had a rear flue that came off the back of the unit near the floor.....the chiminey where it terminated(the thimble) was maybe 18" off the floor. how would you vent a modern furnace in this scenierio. inline draft inducer would be my guess. any ideas??

    vent

Why not just cut a thimble into the chimney at the proper height? Be sure to check the chimney height and size requirements for the new unit. Good Luck

    inducer

just a thought on this: if your trying to vent down what would happen when the burner shut off? I have seen this on much less drop than you would have here and the results are not good. I would recommend going into the chimney at the proper height. if you dont I would recommend an extended post purge to vent the exhaust gasses out of the unit.

i wish i took a picture but the thimble goes into a corner on a 45 and from what i can gather goes through foundation wall i would have to guess about 3 ft before it hits the tiled chimney

    horizontal unit

What about the units designed to be rafter hung? The Lo-boy design would allow you to base it off the floor and pitch the vent right out. I don't think you'll find many over 100K BTU. low 80's AFUE is the best you'll probably find in these units.
