Wallies, need some advice for a friend - Dan H.

Please make sure your friend gets the heat exchanger inspected on that unit before he replaces the motor. I've had a lot of those GS units with cracked H.X.'s in them. If it checks out O.K. then I would agree with everyone else that the 1/3rd HP would be the way to go, although the original unit may have come with a lower HP motor. Also make sure he/she gets a 4 speed motor as thats what's in there now. And by the way that is a 3ton drive in there.

Hope it helps.

Glenn

    Got this from a friend

and I didn't have an answer. Your thoughts? Thanks.

Could you advise me on a personal question?
My Carrier furnace at home (we have forced air heat) has a problem with
    the blower motor.
So the central air conditioner only works sporadically and sometimes
there is a weird metallic sound when it does blow air.
The furnace was installed in 1985. It is Model 58GS075-3, Series
    301CB.
We've contacted a couple of contractors about fixing it and gotten
quotes of $400, $485 and $187. One guy said his quote was based on a
third horsepower motor. Another guy, who didn't quote, suggested we
could get by with a fifth horsepower motor because our house isn't that
    big.
The guy who quoted $187 said we should get a third or even better, a
    half horsepower motor.
Do you have any advice? thanks.
    Retired and loving it.

    Hi Dan!

It would also help if I knew if this was a multi-speed motor.

I used to install Carrier on a daily basis, but not anymore so the model number means nothing to me.

    Carrier

The furnace is only 75,000 btuh and from the looks of the number came with a three ton drive. A third horse motor sounds correct, However the average life of an upflow is about twenty years, That furnace is getting a little long in the tooth. Maybe time for an upgrade instead of a costly repair, are all the other parts still original. The cost for replacement of a furnace is not that much, compared to that of a boiler. The technologies out there are excellent with two stage and variable speed drives the savings are quit nice, just a thought.

    I wonder about that sound

This is a direct drive blower and mounts on rubber bushings, I wonder if the bushings are bad or the bearings so shot the squirrel cage is hitting the fan shroud. I completely agree about a good heat exchanger inspection first, if it's OK then the new motor. I hope the capacitor was checked as well as the power from the circuit board relays, I know one unnamed guy who changed one of these motors only to find 90 volts to the next one, but they probably needed the new motor anyway.
