    Sizing a New Boiler

Can anyone describe the formula used to size a new boiler? Mine is cracked and my plumber wants to put in a new one based on the size of the existing one, because he thinks it feels right. I know it is based on the number of radiators and their size (length, width, height, and number of sections), but I don't know the exact formula for sizing it. Any help will be appreciated.

    Noel, what's wrong with..................

standing across street and if it takes 3 fingers to block view of house it's a 3 section boiler, 4 fingers 4 sections.Man, how I miss the old days hehehe John@Reliable

P.S. Mike, I would get a new plumber or service company who does a "real" inspection of your house and old system.

Ditch the plumber and hire a real heating contractor. Someone who understands steam, steam piping and making a new boiler work with an old system. The guy you use should refuse to quote you a price until he has done a thorough inspection of your home and a heat loss to see what size boiler you actually need. With steam you can run into some problems brought about by a number of factors. The boiler has to be sized large enough to "fill" the radiators with steam, however, many time the radiators present in your home may be larger than what is needed due to updates and improvements to the structure. These would be things like better windows and insulation than what were present when the system was first installed.

Take your time, ask lots of questions and listen to the responses you get the person you are talking with. I'm sure you'll be able to sort the "wheat from the chaff".
  • I heard a new one....

    Do it by weight.

1 BTUH per pound of house.

How do you weigh a house?

    Location

I am located in Montclair, NJ. I have measured all the radiators and counted the numbers of sections of each. Any help on the actual formula to calculate the steam boiler size? I would like to try the calculation myself.
