Combustible Gas Indicators

How many use a natural gas detector? If so which brand do you use?

What determines if you should go into a building with an odor of gas of unkown origin and the amount of gas is in question?

  • i use the

bacharach leakator...works well and runs on real batteries which i find more adaptable to field work than rechargables that take hours to recharge.

    I first used the...

Bacharach Leakator 10 as it would do Natural and LP. I liked it's ability to manually adjust the zero to fine tune finding a leak. I now bought the Bacharach Informant II for it's Gas/Refrigerant abilities. I have only used it twice for gas leaks so far, but it worked very well. I will admit I have to get used to the auto zero on the Informant II.

As to your other question, I have never gone into a building that had such a bad smell that I had to make a judgment call about going in or not. One of my co-techs had a crawl space so full that he had to back out due to a head rush, and then called me, at which point I told him to call the FD, turn off the meter and get everybody out. I guess that if I smelled gas as soon as I entered the structure, depending on the strength I would definatly evacuate and call 911.

    Bacharach

    combustible gas analyser.

If a customer smells gas they typically call the utility and they will determine the seriousness of the leak. They will usually locate it as well and that's where we come in. Repair work.

I use mine to find those "invisible" leaks.

    Just started playing

with a Testo 316-1. Very nice, super simple, even I figured it out. I'm still having fun, but have found some interesting stuff with it.
