T/P relief valves

in THE MAIN WALL
The last couple of Rheem 50 gal 21v50 tanks that i have installed in the last few weeks, from different suppliers have had the Watts 100XXL relief valves rather than 100XL, the newer valves are the long shank with short probe, The probe will not even enter the tank when installed. Anybody else notice this? Is this for a reason? Shouldn't the probe be within the tank for accuracy, Or is this a new design that i'm not aware of. And if so why.
