makeup water into steam boiler

ENJOYED DAN'S STEAM SEMINAR TODAY, GREAT AS ALWAYS. HE MENTIONED THAT COLD WATER SHOULD BE USED TO FEED A STEAM BOILER AND I'VE BEEN LED TO BELIEVE THAT WATER FROM A HOT WATER HEATER IS BETTER- LESS CHANCE FOR THERMAL SHOCK, LESS GAS (O2) IS HELD IN HOT WATER, SOME OF THE HARDNESS COMES OUT OF THE WATER WHEN IT'S HEATED AND IS LEFT TO BURN UP THE WATER HEATER INSTEAD OF THE MORE EXPENSIVE BOILER.

THANKS, JIM

    It's more about

the feeder, Jim. The manufacturers call for this so that the sediment doesn't wind up on the feeder's seat, which can lead to a flooded system. Thanks for being there today. You guys were great!

    Little...

...residential steam boilers should need so litte make-up water, that feeding hot water over cold shouldn't be an issue. If you have a residential steam boiler with a big enough make-up water requirement that hot water is being condsidered, then you've got to deal with the root problem, which is leaks - condensate and/or steam. Large amounts of make-up water is one sure way to kill a little steam boiler before it's time.
