    still going

I've used them for years. With regular maintenance they can give great trouble free service. This being the last model year I now have an extra - ready to replace my 1998 with 300K KM as soon as it needs any kind of repairs. The passenger van model is very little more than the cargo van and much better appointed in the cabin. Fuel consumption is about 700km to the 100 l. Enjoy.....Dan

I have a 1999 Safari. It is a comfortable, smooth riding van.
I have to change my brake pads quite often (about every 10K miles) and there are a few little design quirks about it that drive me crazy.
For instance, at night, there is a reflection in the driver's side window from the head/dome light switch (when it is illuminated) that obstructs my view of the side-view mirror.
The transmission is a slow-shifting piece of crap.
I feel that the back of the van always sits lower than it should.
The seats don't slide back very far( I'm not a tall guy, but I like to stretch out when I'm cruising).
The speakers are lame (I know, big deal.)
You have to be very careful not to overload the glove box or the light stays on (door doesn't close well), killing your battery.
It is difficult to park as the back of the van is difficult to judge in the side-view mirror. My van has no rear windows. I'd imagine a rear-view mirror remedies this.
And lastly, the gearing. The van has a top speed of about 75 mph before it feels like it's struggling. That's fine for running around in the city, but when I have to go any distance , I'd like to have another 5 mph comfortably.

The Astro was designed in the early 1980's to be a small delivery or work van. It's on of the smallest vans you can get without windows. There are a number of people that like to hot rod them. see http://www.astrosafari.com/

    I have an Astro

I bought new last Summer in July of 02.I got the nice model with upgraded stereo, power everything and all wheel drive. It's not for installation work, only for servie. I use it as a hybrid family/service truck, but 95% work over family. I get 13 MPG. The All Wheel Drive diminishes the mileage about 3MPH but it's worth it in rain and especially in snow. Last Winter I was the first persaon able to get out of my neighborhood and start fixxing furnaces. It's very good in the snow. Without the AWD I hear it's not so good. The stereo is kick **** with pre programed equalizer bands and cassette and CD player. (ARH ARH ARH!) I take out the back seat and have everything for work organised in boxes and milk crates. It takes very little time to move in or out if need be. My wife takes it for a week once a year and I have to work with my helper in the Chevy 1 ton. I sure do miss it when it's away. It's relatively trouble free. I have 35000 on it in 1 year and 3 months of useage so I'm in it a lot.
