Fire

The fire is still moving north - although slowly. It is guarded but still out of control within the guard. I live across the street from our largest fire hall - it looks like an international convention of FD's - and there 60 extra police in the area as well. Weather wise - still hot and dry with ony a few drops of rain with lightning that started a few more small fires. The fire crews are doing a heck of a job.

    Finally...

the fires are giving us a break and are pushing away from the city.

More than 30000 people had to leave their homes when the evacuation notice hit them last Friday night. Leaving 30 minutes or less to get out. Noone got hurt!! All affected moved out camly (to the most part).

All of us in Kelowna are proud of our officials and fire crews. With their hard work, only 205 homes were lost, which is a very small number considering the inferno. I think it has grown to more than 20000Ha now.

Prayers and thousands of Kelowna Citizens are there to suppport the families with losses.

I spent my weekend evacuated and helping others to get out. Today I am back at my home.

    me too

Been watching the news from Vancouver. Horrifying. It's good to hear that your home has survived.

A friend of mine is an accountant for the Sally Ann in Vancouver and she taking was donations at the Cher concert last night. Believe it or not she figures they raised around $50,000!

Never thought I'd be wishing for rain but here we are.

    Thanks all.

Looks like we've seen the worst from this fire. It has retreated into the mountains and the fire crews say that they are having a handle on things now.

But trust me, none of the pictures do it justice. Seeing it rage with your own eyes just miles away sure put it into a perspective I will never forget.

I can't stop praising the officials and heros that have been battling it. No lifes were lost!! Houses can be rebuilt.

    Thanks again folks.

    I can't imagine -

what the folks in Kelowna are gong through I have several friends now moving their animals and hoping the fires here will slow down. We are 16 Km away and each day our deck is coated with charred bits. There are several hundred people evacuated - and all are praying for rain and less wind. Best wishes and prayers from Cranbrook.

    16 km is nothing...

...I pray for your community to get some rain soon. Our fire grew in one week from a small 1km² to a huge 200km².

16km is not far at all. Hope the weather changes soon. We all need rain! Who would have ever thought so many people would be praying for rain?

Keep us updated...Just heard that another fire (near Oliver, BC)a little south from here has just caused (minutes ago) more people to be put on evacuation alert. We've had enough. It could be all over now.

    Wow.

I keep tuning into the news that cover your area as well. Hopefully your fire guards will hold.

Our fire is still nurning strong. Last night we had some winds and the fire jumped one of the fire guards. Luckily it is burning away from the city now. Most of us refer to it as the 'sleeping monster'. If the wind changes direction, everything could be different.

Lets hope we'll get some rain soon. Its only been nearly 3 months since we've seen it.
    Keep updating.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Whoa!!!

Glad to hear the worst is over, Mike, hope nothing bad happened to you and yours.

I know the feeling - it's very strange and more stressful than you admit to yourself. I was evacuated from my home for for two weeks last summer, but luckily our home survived the Hayman fire. But that evacuation was more like 3,000 people, not 30,000... I can't IMAGINE! My heart goes out to those who were not so lucky. There are no words to describe that sadness.
