Vitodens/Climate Panel/Radson

This one has a story behind it. The homeowner contacted me last year in early winter to "check out" the system his builder was proposing/installing. When I arrived the homeowner informed me of the builders plans for the heating system, which consisted of a Janitrol furnace and from what I could determine, a totaly inadequate duct system. After mulling things over (that's a huge understatement) we wound up going with Climate Panel on the main floor, 1,300 sq ft+ and Radson panel rads on the upper level and basement. The entire first floor will be continuous circ for all but the master bedroom which will have valves on the Stadler manifold feeding it. The rest of the home will have 9 panel rad cicuits, each with it's own Oventrop TRV controlling it. The system also includes a plate HX for the day when propane hits $2.00 a gallon. When that happens an outdoor wood/corn burning boiler will be added. An SS60 Superstore will provide the domestic water.

Note the black box in the upper left of the boiler pic. It's a Grundfos variable speed well pump control and I'm here to tell you It works slick. It changes the submersible pump's rpm to maintain your set pressure point according to how much water is being srawn at a given time.

We piped the boiler and manifolds this week and got the homeowners son going on the climate panel. (The lad did an excellent job BTW). Hope to tube the entire floor and pressure test in advance of the hardwood going in next week.

  • Could never

figure out what they give you such small water connections on such a large boiler; they're ¾" as well as on the low-loss header. I see that you increased the size of pipe to the Superstor.

That looks like about 10 days of work.....just in the boiler room (1 journeyman, 1 apprentice); maybe longer since it's all screwed pipe. I hope you made some money on the job; you deserve it. Well done.

You've put in at least two Vitodens now, haven't you?

I'd have to add up how many Vito's we've installed. So far, they have proven to be the "real deal" as far as I'm concerned. Yes, the domestic side is 3/4" and we always increase to 1" for max flow through the indirect. I've never seen a low loss header with 3/4" connections. All the ones I've had my hands on have been 1 1/4". 4 days with 3 guys including gas piping and boiler vent. Helps to have the threader right in the basement with you. Running up and down the stairs is what kills timewise.

Not sure if I spelled your name right but this is the post I told you to look for. Welcome to "The Wall", the place where you can learn more about hydronics than anywhere else from the nicest and sharpest people in the heating industry.

For all you regular Wallies, I invited Chris to take a look here and see what he can find out. He has an infloor system that is now being run by a water heater through an HX and is costing him a ton of money to operate. He's asked me to come and take a look to see what can be done to help the situation out. Give him a Hi and how are ya if he shows up.

Chris, this is the best place to be on earth if you have hot water heating questions. Just post em up here and we'll have at it.

As I would expect from you, a simply piped, exceptional system. Who needs copper?

Thanks for the compliment. I'm waiting for the plumbers to finish so we can get water to it and fire it up. Really excited about this one for a number of reasons, mainly because the HO didn't think they could afford it. We got creative and enlisted them to do various things that helped to keep the cost down. Their desire for a system like this made them great to work with.
