How many radiators needed?

We recently bought a partially restored 1890s house. In the restoration process, it appears several (hot water) radiators were removed. Consequently, we can't heat the first floor above 45 degrees. We can't tell exactly how many are missing b/c they removed some walls and added/extended others. Right now there is a radiator (not originals) in every room except one. But obviously, more are needed. Can anyone tell me if there are specs for how many radiators are needed per square foot? Thanks!

    More Heat

Hello and congrats on your new place...You need your heating pro. to do a heatloss of your house,so he can figure the load of each room.. and go from there....Most pros. can even figure for old style cast iron raditors and may have a location for some..You can go baseboard! Anyway you go it will take time and money!!!If YOU do it right YOU will be happy,DO NOT cut corners to save a buck now,you will pay later as you are now because someone else did!!!Good luck...Richard

    Best thing to do

is to start with a full heat-loss calculation of the entire house. See how much heat each room needs, and size your radiators from that.
