I am installing a 3 zoneCast Iron Boiler..2 heat 1 Super Stor...The S/S is wired to the Cold Start relay...From the Taco 502 relay what is the bestway to wire it so the burner pulls in on demand..Taco shows zr/zc hook up for tankless and for cold start they shot the end switch going to T T..I want to go to the limit of the controll.( Blue wire} if I am right..Do I use ZR to the limit???Do I leave in all jumpers???Thanks...Richard

hey rich
I think you need the 503 for this job. paul.0 -
You can use the 502
We use them often on 3 zone system with a priority . At the Taco website they have instructions on how to wire it up . One problem though - the online diagrams are screwy - some terminals do not line up right in the schematics . If theres a rep from Taco who checks in here , they might want to take a look . If you follow the instructions underneath the diagrams , its pretty easy to follow , and they tell you where to put jumpers in and how to wire it for a priority indirect . Heres the link - http://www.taco-hvac.com/uploads/Product_Install/12.pdf0 -
Like Paul said...
Get a 503 W/ priority. Easiest thing to do what you want .

Taco Relay
Thanks all for your help..I may have the number wrong on the relay..It is a 2 zone relay, but I agree a 3 zone would be easier, but I do like to wire things out of the norm of easy... sometimes ... I check out the website and if any1 wants I can draw a new wiring template for cold start w/cir ..on aqua stat and xtra relay...Their wiring pics are like the Pensottie Blue, very mind twisting till you figure out how they write them ...Thankyou all for your help..Richard0 -
If the 2 zone relay is on the boiler already
You can use a Taco single zone relay to do what you want also . We use them alot where we install an indirect to an existing boiler . Its a little more involved in wiring up though , but it will give priority to the indirect , as well as keep the system cold start . Is the boiler gas or oil ?0 -
Taco
Hey Ron it is oil and the controlls are there..I am trying to find out if I use the Z/R terminal off the 502 to power ths cold start controll!Tacoweb site is not helpfull with this install..I am already wired w/xtra wires in place...I am thinking Z/R to the cold side of aqua stat..Do yoy know if Z/R powers on demand for heat???Thankyou everyone for your help...Could not find e mail support @ TAco...Richard0 -
Theres an isolated end switch on the 502
Its X1 and X2 . If you run a wire from them to the boiler's T-T , it will kick on the burner in a call for heat . But if you still have the indirect circulator connected directly to the cold start aquastat , this wont work because it will turn on the indirect all the time the heating zones kick on . And that is also part of the reason you cant use ZR to power the burner . Well , you can use ZR , but it will need to go through a separate aquastat on the boiler to control the burner separately . What model number aquastat is on the boiler ?

Hey Ron
If I have it right it is a Honeywell 8124 cold start...or 8248..I know I can use one side of the controlllimit buut not sure which 1 on the taco to sendpower to the aqua stat...The wires are blue on top and I think red ...that will power the burner with out powering the S/S zone
//// Thankys Richard

I know what you are trying to do but I have not had a Taco relay in a while. The wire you want on the 8148 is blue. You can tell because your torx screw driver won't fit the red one, it has a pin in the center so you can't miswire.
ZR would be the connection that would send power or a call for heat. If you had X1 X2 terminals you could jumper X1 to L1 and X2 would go to your blue wire on the 8148. In a case where you have no ZR or X terminal you could piggy back with the pump terminal if it does not exceed the amp draw of the contactor.
You can rewire around almost anything when you understand how. I just hate it when people make it a mystery to the next guy who comes along. Make sure the power has a common disconnect. And to any eletricians who may be listening, they sell wire in more colors than black and white. It helps when troubleshooting later0 -
Hey Bill
L.O.L. I hear you about color code..I have all the wires colored coded . and will return on wed. to hook up...Thankyou for your input,at least I know I am on the right track..Wish TACO would offer more options..But at least I have you guys here at the wall for my TECH. Support...Thanks and hope to return the favor to you all...Richard0 -
Oh Bill,
Do you ever "not speak the truth"? I wish I had a nickle for every time I saw black and white only. I have found a few that have numbered stickers for the terminus', but they are few and far between . Guess you had to be there. (that's the way I hear it from electricians so far) Chris0
