TRV's for steam radiators

Options
We have a job in San Francisco where quite a few of the existing steam radiators will now be oversized because the rooms will be insulated and the windows changed to double glazed. What experience have you with the Danfoss RA 2000 for steam radiators as far as reliability and performance?

I'm told that you have to cycle the boiler with a timer; like on-off every 20 minutes or so to give the radiator a chance to fill up with air again so that the TRV can close if it's reached setpoint.

Mad Dog, Steamhead, Mark Hunt, etc.; are you there?

    They work well

Put the thermostat in a room that has no trv, usually a cooler room, and let 'er rip! You'll be very happy.

Good advice from Noel as usual

also, yes, it is critical that the boiler does not run all the time...had a commercial job once, where the boioler ran 24 /7 ...trvs could not hold back a thing....but this is an odd job...on resiedential i wouldn't worry. md

    What pressure steam

Kind of curious what pressure steam you were running? TRV's installed on my larger buildings,(300 man soldier dorms)baseboard type DanFoss valves, I believe 2000's, no problem when they remodeled all the windows. Had steam PRV's that maintained the 7 to 11 pound range. I thought proportional meant that it was always seeking, unless the TRV is turned to the off position.... Joe

    Boiler Cycling

    Alan,
The only time you "need" to cycle the boiler with a Danfoss TRV is when using the 1 pipe steam valve. With this valve we are controling the release of air from the system and need the system to go to zero pressure at least once an hour to allow air back into the system. These valves work well to prevent overheating and best when used with systems operating on ounces of pressure, not pounds.
    Good luck,

    Thanks, guys

This system operates at 2 psi.

How long can the owner expect these TRV's to last? 2 yrs., 10 yrs., more?

    More

In my experience, at a college with 800 of them, mostly on steam, they only fail when physically assaulted.

I used Macon, Taco, Honeywell/Braukman, Danfoss, and Tour and Andersen.

    They hold up well.
